I danced with Mrs Gandhi

Sylvester Stein's Autobiography written at the age of 87. It's unconventional, zany and full of his spirited take on life, from his early childhood as the son of Lithuanian immigrants in Cape Town, to his days defying the South African regime while editor of Drum Magazine, and then to his setting up of a large publishing company in the UK. This was capped by his becoming a champion sprinter late in life.

It is a fascinating read from this life-loving and inventive comic spirit.

Available as an ebook.

A taste of the critics

"A wonderful tour de force, insouciant, likely-boy stuff which can be read at a sitting ... wonderfully flamboyant ... a serious story to tell."

Denis Herbstein

More information

"University (16 to 20), navy (21 to 23), the stage (24 to 25), reporter (25 to 28), political editor (29 to 32), editor of Drum (33 to 35), London publisher (36 to 40, eventually to 87), in between setting up Anti-apartheid (41 to 45)... and much still to come. I'm no mere cat however, I'm hoping to end up with a total of more than nine lives before I expire: author, athletic champion, playwright, dog-walker and what about things like marriage with all those great ladies...?"
